115-year-old Kurmawa prison in Kano will be turned into a museum.

To preserve the state's colonial and cultural heritage, the Kano State Government has announced plans to turn the 115-year-old Kurmawa Maximum Security Prison into a museum.

In 1910, the prison was built by the British colonial government in the vicinity of the Kano Emir's Palace.

It was originally intended to house 690 inmates. Kurmawa has long been one of the most prominent colonial authority and correctional history symbols in Northern Nigeria. On his verified Facebook page late on Sunday, the governor's Special Adviser on Information, Ibrahim Adam, made the announcement that the inmates who are currently being held at the Kurmawa Correctional Centre would be transferred to a modern facility in Janguza, close to the military barracks along the Kano–Gwarzo–Dayi Federal Highway.

"The Kano State government will transfer all inmates currently at the Kurmawa Correctional Centre to Janguza under the leadership of Governor Abba K Yusuf," he wrote. "While the Kurmawa Correctional Centre will be transformed into a museum dedicated to preserving historical artifacts and promoting the rich state culture," he added.

The brand-new Janguza facility, which was constructed while former President Muhammadu Buhari was in office, can accommodate 3,000 inmates, according to information gathered by GLOBALGISTZNG.
