Minister Umahi reported that the Tinubu administration installed CCTV on the third mainland bridge as well to monitor attempts at suicide by Nigerians.

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, disclosed this during an interview on Channels TV, on Friday.

The administration led by President Bola Tinubu has stated that it installed closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos as part of a larger effort to increase critical infrastructure safety and security. This was made clear by Dave Umahi, the Minister of Works, in an interview on Channels TV on Friday.

He explained that the surveillance system is intended to prevent suicide attempts on the bridge as well as monitor security breaches. We have installed CCTV cameras beneath the deck to catch anyone digging up sand within a 10-kilometer radius. Umahi stated, "We have built an examination house next to the sea on the Third Mainland Bridge, where we have the police, the navy, the army, and local security." “They will all be there watching the CCTV so that anybody who is trying to take his life on the Third Mainland Bridge, they will spot the person.

There will be no more sand excavation under the deck around the piles with this CCTV, "he added. The minister also discussed the Independence Bridge's recent temporary closure and reopening in Lagos. He stated that the approach slab's failure due to a flawed design and subsequent erosion of the sand beneath it necessitated the closure.

According to Umahi, the slab, originally built using a cantilever method, was structurally unsuitable for the location, leading to its collapse. The minister provided updates on the ongoing Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project in a related development.

He announced that a significant portion of the road will be ready for President Bola Tinubu to commission on May 25, 2025, and he expressed satisfaction with the pace of work. He stated, "As of today, approximately 15 kilometres by two carriageways on average have been achieved at the beginning of section one, and approximately 5 kilometres have been achieved at the end of the project at Eleko, where section one stopped." He stated, "So, the idea is that by the 25th of May, continuously 30 kilometers will be made available for Mr. President to commission from the beginning of section one down to kilometre 0 to 20."
