Police have refuted allegations of torturing Sowore, who reportedly declined medical treatment on two occasions. They maintain that his detention is legally justified and supported by a court order.

The Nigeria Police Force has refuted claims that prominent activist Omoyele Sowore was subjected to torture while in custody, asserting that his recent arrest stemmed from "credible, corroborated allegations" of criminal activities, including forgery and cyberstalking.

In a statement released on August 8, 2025, by Force Public Relations Officer DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Police characterized Sowore as someone who manipulates public perception and uses propaganda to discredit state institutions, particularly the Inspector-General of Police.

The statement clarified that Sowore's arrest was conducted lawfully, based on serious allegations currently under investigation, and emphasized adherence to legal protocols and the rights of the suspect.

Furthermore, the Police noted that Sowore was granted bail within the constitutional timeframe and is aware of the charges against him, with a court appearance anticipated soon.

Addressing a widely circulated image of Sowore with a bandaged arm, the Police described it as a misleading attempt to provoke public outrage, explaining that the bandage was part of his personal items when he responded to their invitation prior to his arrest.

In response to allegations of brutality, the Force acted swiftly by sending a medical team to assess the situation, demonstrating their commitment to accountability and transparency.
