In a statement on Friday, Henry Okoye, the Imo State police spokesperson, confirmed the attacks and deaths. Mr Okoye, a deputy superintendent of police, wrongly said the attacks happened in the early hours of Friday.

In addition, the spokesperson stated that the attacks had left "over seven people dead" and "several others critically injured." He stated that members of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed militant wing, the Eastern Security Network, were suspected of being the attackers. Mr. Okoye stated that the attacks in the communities have been “strongly” condemned by the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Aboki Danjuma.

The statement says that Mr. Danjuma called the attacks "barbaric, inhumane, and totally unacceptable." The commissioner reassured Imo State residents that the state's police command has utilized "adequate operational and intelligence assets" to identify and locate the perpetrators.

The chief of police also led a tactical unit of police that did an "intense combing" of the affected areas. He said that the situation was now under control and that security measures had been taken to prevent more attacks and bring the area back to a stable state of peace.

He urged the residents to maintain their composure, remain vigilant, and uphold the law, and to provide the police with "useful information" that could be useful in ongoing investigations. Imo's security has deteriorated, as it has in other states in the southeast of Nigeria, with frequent armed attacks. Some of these attacks in the region have resulted in the deaths or kidnapping of a lot of people and the injuries of others.

The Nigerian government has made numerous claims that IPOB is to blame for the attacks in the area. However, the separatist group has consistently denied responsibility for the attacks. IPOB is leading the fight for a Biafran independent state, which it wants to separate from parts of Nigeria's south-east and south-south.
