Peter Obi, a former Labour Party presidential candidate, called the Indigenous People of Biafra leader's continued detention an "unreasonable situation." Obi stressed that it was an unjustifiable action by Federal Government to keep Kanu in custody for four years, especially if the allegations were based on verbal offences.
GLOBALGISTZNG reports that the IPOB ‘s leader had been detained since the last administration of former president, Muhammadu Buhari.
He was arrested in June, 2021 by officials of Kenya Immigration service, which was immediately transferred to Nigeria.
Kanu was accused by Department of State Services for inciting violence within the South East part of Nigeria.
Speaking on Sunday during an interview with Channels Television, former governor of Anambra State, Mr. According to Obi, Kanu's alleged use of vulgar language was not sufficient to warrant his continued detention. He said:
“For every one of them, I mean, why is he still being held? I find it hard to understand. “Some people said that because he used vulgar words and everything. I’ve not seen it. They said he’s using vulgar words.
“But it doesn’t bother me if I’m president, whether you call me a thief or an idiot, which they call me today. It doesn’t bother me.
“My duty as a leader is for the common man, to put food on their table.
“If there are people I can talk to, I’ll talk to them.
Let's say there is a bandit operating in the North East tomorrow; I will meet him. But that is just to establish a link to say enough is enough. And afterwards, I’ll deal with it decisively.”
