The alleged assault on journalists that occurred during the most recent #TakeItBackProtest has been the subject of an investigation by the Rivers State Police Command. This comes as a result of a complaint that was sent to the Command by the Nigeria Union of Journalists' Rivers State chapter.
In the complaint, the Union asked for an apology from the Command within 14 days and threatened to boycott Police activities in the state. Reacting, the command in a statement by its spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, on Wednesday, said the media was described as a strategic partner, as it condemned the actions of some of its officers.
It assured that the issue will be treated with utmost importance and findings from the probe will be made public.
The statement reads, “The Rivers State Police Command has received with concern the complaints by our strategic partner, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, over the alleged assault on its members by some police officers during a recent planned protest.
“The Command unequivocally condemns this unfortunate incident and has commenced a full and thorough investigation into the matter.
"Some personnel are currently being questioned as part of the ongoing investigation," according to preliminary findings. Continuing it said, “The Rivers State Police Command holds journalists in the highest regard, recognizing their critical role in fostering peace, security, and development through their reportage and public enlightenment efforts.
“We regret any actions that may have strained this bond and value the longstanding relationship and collaborative efforts shared with the NUJ. We reassure the NUJ, its members, and the general public that this matter will not be brushed under the rug. Instead, it will be treated with the seriousness it deserves.
“Upon the conclusion of investigations, the Command will make public its findings and the measures taken to address the situation.”
The Command reiterated that officers were deployed to ensure the safety of life and security, confirming that it was aware of the planned protest. It, however, disassociated itself from what it termed overzealous conduct by some of its officers.
“It is important to clarify that the Command was aware of the planned protest and proactively deployed personnel to provide adequate security cover for all citizens, residents, peace-loving members of the public, and most importantly, the press.
“Our presence at the scene was instrumental in preventing criminal elements from hijacking what was intended to be a peaceful protest.
“The Command remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting lives and property across Rivers State and will continue to carry out its duties with professionalism, empathy, and respect for human rights.
“We dissociate ourselves from any form of overzealous or unprofessional conduct and reiterate our zero-tolerance stance on such behavior. We are grateful to the Nigerian Union of Journalists and the general public for their understanding and assistance in maintaining the Police Force's integrity.
