Nnamdi Kanu cr!tic!zes Igbo political leaders for their neglect, but is confident of his release in April.

The FCT, Engineer, President-General of the Igbo Community Association (ICA) Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, has revealed that Nnamdi Kanu is optimistic about securing his release from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) by April 2025. Ezenekwe said that Kanu expressed disappointment over the absence of strong Igbo leadership and called for renewed advocacy for the region's interests in a statement released following his visit to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) at the DSS headquarters in Abuja.

Kanu appeared to be healthy, had gained weight, and was still in good spirits, according to the leader of the ICA. According to reports, Kanu expressed hope that the courts would grant him freedom in the coming weeks and reaffirmed his trust in his legal team. However, he criticized the Igbo people's deteriorating conditions in Nigeria and emphasized that prominent voices were not actively defending their cause.

Ezenekwe also expressed Kanu's concern regarding the historical neglect of Igbo freedom fighters by citing Ralph Uwazurike, who, according to Kanu, had good intentions but was abandoned by his own people while incarcerated. He warned that the struggle for self-determination could be weakened by such neglect. In the statement on Thursday, Ezenekwe appealed directly to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to intervene in Kanu’s case.

He urged the president to demonstrate the political will necessary to secure Kanu's release and reminded the president of his previous involvement in the pro-democracy movement. According to him, the continued detention of the IPOB leader serves as a symbol of political repression rather than justice. According to the statement, "I had the honor of visiting Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), at 1:30 pm yesterday, Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at the DSS headquarters in Abuja." Our meeting was a crucial reminder of our shared struggle for recognition, justice, and the advancement of Igbo interests in a setting shaped by political tension and community aspirations. “Nnamdi Kanu, who appeared to be in better health and more at ease during our conversation, reiterated his resilience in spite of the circumstances at hand.

He communicated a strong message of self-assurance, noting that he is taking his prescribed medications and remains in good spirits. “More importantly, he expressed dissatisfaction at the apparent leadership void within the Igbo community—a neglect that has allowed our people's voice to diminish at a crucial time. His words brought back memories of past difficulties faced by fellow freedom fighters, such as Ralph Uwazurike's neglect under previous administrations, reminding us all of the sacrifices made for our struggle. “At the height of our conversation, Nnamdi Kanu fervently called for a referendum—a crucial step toward self-determination—and reiterated his firm belief that he has not done anything wrong other than urging our people to wake up from their slumber. “His unwavering confidence in his legal team, and his hope for release by the end of April 2025, resonated as a powerful testament to his dedication and fortitude.

“A crucial juncture in our ongoing struggle for freedom and justice was brought to light at this moment. “The personal observations I made as our meeting came to a close only strengthened my resolve. His apparent physical and emotional recovery moved me—a sign of hope in the face of adversity. “A sobering reminder of our history and a call to rectify the present, Kanu's reflective acknowledgment of past allies served as both a sobering reminder of our history and a critique of the current state of leadership.

His message to the Igbo community was clear: we must not abandon our freedom fighters, whose sacrifices continue to illuminate our path to liberation. “In light of today’s encounter, I issue an earnest appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I ask him to take decisive action in securing the freedom of our brother and hero, Nnamdi Kanu, and to draw on the spirit of democracy and dedication to justice that characterized his own struggles. “Let this moment serve as a turning point—a renewal of our collective determination to safeguard the rights, dignity, and future of the Igbo people.”
